Heart Of The Ocean | The Iconic Diamond Necklace Of The Titanic
The Heart of the Ocean (also known as Le Cœur de la Mer) is the name of a fictional 56-carat blue diamond featured prominently in the 1997 film “Titanic”. The fictional jewel was inspired by one-of-a-kind blue Hope Diamond. It is said to originally be owned by Louis XVI and shortly after his execution in 1793, the diamond disappeared and was recut into a heart-like shape, known as "The Heart of the Ocean". This precious stone was subsequently crafted into a white gold and a colourless diamond setting necklace.
Caledon Hockley purchased the diamond for his fiancée, Rose and presented it to her. Later, Rose shows the necklace to Jack Dawson and requested that he drew her with only the necklace.
The heart-shaped blue diamond necklace plays a silent leading role in the film and ultimately ends up at the bottom of the ocean. If the Heart of the Ocean had been a real necklace, it would have been valued at a whopping 350 million dollars!
For the Heart of the Ocean design, London-based jewelers Asprey & Garrard used cubic zirconias set in white gold to create an Edwardian-style necklace to be used as a prop in theTitanic film.
After the film's success, Asprey & Garrard were commissioned to create an authentic Heart of the Ocean necklace using the original design. The result was a platinum-set, 171-carat (34.2 g) heart-shaped Ceylon sapphire surrounded by 103 diamonds. Celine Dion proudly wore the necklace to the 1998 Academy Awards ceremony. Celine Dion is the singer of the film’s passionate and beloved theme song, "My Heart Will Go On."
Asprey & Gerard wasn't the only jeweler to make a replica of the Heart of the Ocean. Famous Harry Winston chose to make his own version of the movie's Heart of the Ocean necklace. He used a 15-carat blue diamond as the centerpiece for the necklace. Then, he surrounded the necklace in beautiful white diamonds. To honor his new piece of jewelry, Henry Winston allowed Gloria Stuart to wear the necklace to the Academy Awards in 1998. Gloria was the ideal person to wear this jewelry because of her role as the elderly Rose in the movie The Titanic.
